How To Mix Metals Like a Pro

How to mix metals #1

I often have customers asking for my input and ideas on how they can style their jewellery and one of the questions that frequently comes up is, "Is it okay for me to wear two different metal tones together?"...followed by, "And how do I do that??"

The answer to these questions is a resounding, "Yes!" and, "Let me show you how!" That's why I've teamed up with one of my favourite style influencers and bloggers, Samantha, from The Family Jewels, to bring you a special How To Mix Metals styling guide.

Samantha has such an amazing, cool-girl style that she makes easy for real women to emulate. You know what I'm talking about: we don't all sit around posing for photos in designer clothing every day - most of us have busy lives with jobs, kids, errands, and other "stuff" to attend to. That's why I love Sam: she walks the talk as a busy mom of two little boys who also works as a personal stylist that loves travelling and having fun with her family.

Samantha did such a beautiful job styling the different looks we've put together to showcase my Five Ways to Mix Metals. Check it out below, and be sure to pop over to Sam's blog for some fantastic styling tips for your whole wardrobe!

How to Mix Metals

How to mix metals - #2

The old rules saying you shouldn’t mix the metal colours of your jewellery no longer apply. Looking for some inspiration on how to incorporate mixed metals into your look? Here are a few of my favourite ways to combine different metals, so you can take the guesswork out of styling your jewellery.

1.) Pair silver and rose gold.

Ease into mixing metals by pairing the cool tone of silver or white gold, with the warmth of rose gold. These two metal colours make a gorgeous and eye-catching duo.

2.) Tie your look together with a unifying element.

When combining metal colours, keep one aspect of your jewellery consistent throughout. It could be sticking with a certain theme like geometric shapes, or maintaining the gemstone colour of your pieces. This is a great way to create cohesion and consistency within your look, while experimenting with mixed metals.

3.) Keep it light and airy.

Allow the mixed metals of your accessories to be the focal point of your look, by keeping the gemstones and style of your pieces light and airy. Think diamonds, crystals, and moonstone, showcased in simple designs and on delicate chain.

4.) Layer away.

Wear necklaces of differing lengths in a mix of metal colours. You can incorporate one or more of the tips above, as inspiration for your look.

5.) Most importantly: have fun!

The days when mixing metals was considered a fashion mis-step are behind us, so enjoy experimenting with your jewellery and seeing what works for you.

What I'm Loving Lately

Posted on May 26, 2017 by Keltie Maguire | 1 comment

Here are some of the products, places and things that I'm loving lately!

1. Cannon Beach, Oregon

I had the pleasure of visiting Cannon Beach over the May Long Weekend, and it was every bit as special as I'd been told. Miles of breathtaking coastline, hiking trails to explore, and a charming little oceanside town make Cannon Beach a must-visit.

2. Insight Timer

After various attempts at implementing a daily meditation practice in my life, I discovered this awesome meditation app (thanks for the tip, Mom!). Unlike other meditation apps, Insight Timer has literally thousands of amazing guided meditations to discover and is completely free. The Live Awake meditations with Sarah Blondin are my absolute favourite, but there is always something new to discover. The best news? I've finally become a "regular meditator". Ommmmm....

3. These sneakers

I have to admit that I'm not normally a "pink girl", but these blush-coloured Lacoste sneakers from Hills Dry Goods called my name anyways. I'm pleased to report that they fit like a dream, and are now in heavy rotation in my spring wardrobe.

4. BITE Beauty's Agave Lip Balm

I am a huge fan of BITE's lipsticks, which are produced in Canada, using only natural, food-grade ingredients. Their recently launched lip balm is a soothing vanilla and agave treat for the lips!

5. The Duality Necklace

This little pretty from our Spring Collection is around my neck constantly these past few months. I love layering it with my labradorite Mirror Necklace, but it looks perfectly chic, all by its lonesome.

The BEST way to clean your sterling silver

Posted on March 01, 2017 by Keltie Maguire | 0 comments

This method for cleaning your tarnished silver jewellery is faster, more effective, and less messy than using a polishing cloth or cleaning solution:

Step 1. Line a small tupperware or old yoghurt container with aluminium foil.

Step 2. Add your tarnished silver jewellery plus 1-2 spoonfuls of baking soda.

Step 3. Pour enough boiling water over your pieces to cover your jewellery.

Step 4. Watch in amazement as your silver jewellery is transformed! You can “stir” the jewellery around a bit with a plastic or wooden utensil (i.e. a chopstick) to ensure it's thoroughly cleaned and add more baking soda as necessary.

Step 5. Rinse your jewellery with water, and then dry carefully with a soft cloth or towel.

A few notes on the above…

  • I have tried this method on gold-plated sterling silver (gold vermeil), and it also works like a charm!
  • Yes, you might smell “rotten eggs” as the sulphide tarnish is removed from your jewellery.
  • Please exercise caution when using this method to clean gemstone jewellery, especially pieces containing porous stones like opals, turquoise and pearls. Since extreme heat can damage gemstones, if you do wish to clean your gemstone jewellery using this method, warm water should also do the trick – it will just take a bit longer to work.
  • Don’t use this method on any jewellery that has been intentionally oxidized as it will remove the lovely, antiqued detailing!

Giving Back This Valentine's Day

Posted on February 04, 2017 by Keltie Maguire | 0 comments

This Valentine's Day we're partnering with women's philanthropic networking group, YES! Vancouver, to raise funds for Dress For Success. From February 6th through Monday, February 13th, we will be donating 20% of Keltie Leanne Designs' online sales to Dress For Success Vancouver, to help assist in their mission to build confidence and help remove barriers to employment for women in our community.

Supporting and empowering other women is of huge importance to our company. We believe that approaching our relationships with others - both in the public sphere and amongst friends and family - with kindness, love and an attitude of giving, is a way we can positively impact the world around us.

As we have powerfully witnessed in recent weeks (and throughout history!), women have the ability to be true change-makers. Whether by teaching and upholding positive values for our children, exhibiting strong leadership in the workplace, or by raising our voices in support of broader, societal change, there are so many ways that we as women are positively changing the world around us. Of course, to truly bring impact into this world, we need both the tools and support to do so.

Besides physically equipping their clients with apparel and accessories, Dress For Success lends career services and skills development programs to women facing barriers to employment, so they can confidently enter the workforce, and open doors to new opportunities in their lives and the lives of their families.

When you decide to shop Keltie Leanne Designs for yourself or someone you love this Valentine's Day, you can feel beautiful inside and out, knowing that 20% of your purchase will be donated to make a positive impact in the life of someone else.
