Your Keltie Leanne Designs jewellery will shine brighter and last longer with a bit of extra care. You may be asking...

Can I wear my jewellery in the shower?

We recommend that you remove your jewellery before the following activities: bathing, swimming, sleeping, sports & other physical activities.

Shampoos and lotions, cleaning supplies, salt and pool water, sweat – all of these elements can eventually take a toll on your jewellery, causing metals to dull or tarnish, and gemstones to discolour or become damaged.

We know you love your jewellery so much that you hate to take it off, but trust us, your jewellery will thank-you for it.

I left a sterling silver necklace on my bedside table for weeks, and now it's dull and tarnished. Help!

Don't worry - we have the BEST way for you to clean your sterling silver here

How should I store my jewellery when I'm not wearing it?

Put those babies away: though it's tempting to store pieces out in the open, moisture and other elements can harm your jewels and it's easy to end up with a heap of tangled pieces.

One of the very best ways to store your pieces is in small, clear, resealable bags.

Be sure to keep these little plastic pouches in a safe, dark place, away from light, like in a jewellery box or small drawer.

There's no need to break out the zippered sandwich bags; a package of 100 small, resealable bags can be purchased for a few dollars at most bead and craft shops.

Is there anything else I can do to keep my jewellery sparkling?

Yes! Regular cleanings with a soft, lint-free cloth will help keep your jewellery beautiful. We suggest avoiding cleaning solutions and treated polishing cloths, as these can damage certain gemstones and otherwise be hard on your jewellery.

We also suggest putting your jewellery on last in the morning: perfumes, lotions, hairspray and the like, can all cause damage to your favorite jewels.

See below for specific tips on how to care for and clean different types of jewellery and gemstones.

    Ring Care

Extra care should be taken with our rings, especially those made of sterling silver or gold-plated sterling silver:

    • Remove rings before washing your hands.
    • Avoid the use of anti-bacterial hand sanitizers, which can damage metals and remove the plating on your jewellery.
    • Store sterling silver and gold-plated silver rings in a small plastic bag or cloth pouch between wears to prevent tarnishing.

    Cleaning How-To's

Below are some tips on how to better care for different types of jewellery.

    • Use caution when cleaning any plated metals (including gold vermeil, which is gold plating over sterling silver); plated metals can easily wear off, so you’ll want to rub lightly.
    • Warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush is a great way to clean gold (including gold fill) and most coloured gemstones – just avoid detergent based soaps, and be sure that your jewellery is 100% dry before wearing or being put away. Oh, and don’t forget to use a bowl to clean your jewellery and not the sink – that’s just tempting disaster.
    • Emeralds, onyx, turquoise and pearls should be cleaned with extra caution, using only plain water and a very soft brush, and then dried and polished with a soft cloth.
    • Avoid getting beaded jewellery wet – rather, just wipe the surface of the beads with a soft cloth.

When in doubt, the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.) is a great online resource on how to properly and safely clean your jewels (www.gia.edu).
